SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA OF THE ACADEMY OF MUSIC, UNIVERSITY OF ZAGREB
Franz Anton Krager, Conductor

Boris Papandopulo: Concert Overture, KM 59
Aaron Copland: Four Dance Episodes from the ballet Rodeo
Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky: Symphony No. 4 in F minor, Op. 36

After presenting himself to the audience with the Symphony Orchestra, Choir and soloists of the Academy of Music in the attractive programme titled American Medley in November 2018, the maestro from the USA with a Central European name, Franz Anton Krager, returns to the Saturday at Lisinski series with a programme no less interesting and varied, leading the orchestra of Croatia's oldest higher-education institution for music.

Boris Papandopulo composed his Concert Overture, KM 59 for a large orchestra in 1951, on the occasion of the 25th anniversary of the founding of Zagreb Radio Station, but with its spirited atmosphere and joie de vivre, it is suitable for marking any festive occasion.

A touch of the North American West comes to us with Four Dance Episodes from Aaron Copland's ballet Rodeo, composed for the Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo company in 1942 and choreographed by Agnes de Mille.   The ballet brings to the stage a Cowgirl who does not fit into the male environment of the ranch, but ultimately finds happiness. That same year, Copland composed a suite from the ballet, including all but one of its movements, thus contributing to more frequent performances of this energetic music in concert halls.

The Symphony Orchestra of the Academy of Music, University of Zagreb, will also perform Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 4 in F minor, Op. 36, on which the Russian composer worked almost one hundred and fifty years ago, from 1877 to 1878. Like most of the composer’s mature works, it can be interpreted in connection with his turbulent life, but also as a passionate musical narrative larger than life.
