One of today’s leading clarinettists, the versatile Swedish musician Martin Fröst, is coming to Zagreb again, this time in a triple role – as composer, soloist and conductor of the Swedish Chamber Orchestra. Fröst's versatility is not only evident in this – his exceptionally broad clarinet repertoire encompasses music from baroque to contemporary, from classical to klezmer, and he plays on various contemporary and historical instruments.
The audience of the Saturday at Lisinski concert series will also be able to see this breadth. Fröst will present himself as a soloist in one of the most beloved works of the concertante clarinet repertoire – Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s Concerto for Clarinet and Orchestra in A major. The most extensive work on the programme, with which Fröst will present himself as a conductor – Ludwig van Beethoven's Symphony No. 7 – is in the same key. The programme also includes two contemporary Swedish works: Helix by the young composer Jacob Mühlrad and Nomadic Dances, co-authored by Martin Fröst himself and his brother Göran.
The Swedish Chamber Orchestra members are Martin Fröst’s reliable collaborators; he has been their chief conductor since 2019. Although it is a relatively young ensemble, founded under its present name in 1995, the Orchestra continues the activities of several previous orchestras that had operated in Örebro since 1831. In its current form, it was particularly shaped by its long-serving chief conductor Thomas Dausgaard and its principal guest conductor Nikolaj Znaider.
