After pondering the idea of writing a comic opera on the historical theme of the Nuremberg Meistersingers for more than twenty years, Richard Wagner finished composing The Mastersingers to his own libretto as late as 1867. This work, premiered in 1868 and designated as a music drama under the umbrella of a comprehensive reform, is preceded not by an overture but by a Prelude which, presenting a series of striking leitmotifs, introduces the grand and festive, but above all cheerful atmosphere of the stage action.
Richard Strauss's early symphonic poem Don Juan proves to be no less influential, but also a demanding score for a large Romantic orchestra. After its premiere in 1889, the young Bavarian composer established himself on the international scene as one of the leading representatives of musical modernism, and this spirited, yet defiantly playful, at times passionate and wistful, and at times humorous work became the musical motto of an entire generation of composers.
Not many words are needed to announce Ludwig van Beethoven's Fifth Symphony in C minor, Op. 67, completed in 1808 and premiered in 1809. It is a universally known work, which, despite the fact that its opening motif has been heard in various media all too often, still sounds fresh because it is characterized by strict musical unity, maximum goal-directedness, and bold dramatic power.
