Arthur Honegger: Symphony No. 3, Liturgique, H. 186
Antonín Dvořák: Concerto for Cello and Orchestra in B minor, Op. 104, B. 191

At the first concert of the season, subscribers to the Saturday at Lisinski series will once again have the opportunity to hear musical delights performed by the Croatian Radio and Television Symphony Orchestra under their chief conductor Pascal Rophé. On this occasion, he will be joined by a compatriot as soloist, the French cellist Gautier Capuçon.
Having gained fame as a young man with his older brother, the violinist Renaud, whom the series subscribers could hear in January 2025, Gautier has been performing on the world’s leading stages for more than twenty years.

Arthur Honegger composed his Third Symphony from 1945 to 1946 as a reflection on the recently ended Second World War, and titled it the Liturgical Symphony, since each of its three movements was inspired by certain parts of the liturgy. This work, unfortunately still relevant today, evokes the Dies irae (Day of Wrath) from the Requiem Mass in its first movement, De profundis clamavi (Out of the depths I cry to you, O Lord) in the second, and calls for peace in the third, Dona nobis pacem.

Gautier Capuçon will appear in one of the most popular concertos in the cello repertoire, Antonín Dvořák’s Concerto for Cello and Orchestra in B minor, Op. 104, B. 191.  Although the composer struggled to compose this highly personal work (in the USA from 1894 to 1895), it has not ceased to delight audiences with its passion and lyricism since its premiere in London in 1896.
