Ever since the Cantus Ensemble gave its debut concert as part of the 21st Music Biennale Zagreb two and a half decades ago, the Croatian music scene has been enriched by continuous performances of contemporary music, equally by Croatian and foreign composers. By founding the ensemble in 2001 “with the aim of exploring, discovering and presenting new and previously unexplored spheres of New Music,” the leadership of the Music Biennale Zagreb, headed by Berislav Šipuš, gave fresh impetus to the development and more active life of the contemporary music scene in Croatia, primarily through its own concert series in the Small Hall of Lisinski Concert Hall, while at the same time broadening horizons with numerous notable guest appearances and international collaborations.

The Cantus Ensemble operates under the artistic direction of the distinguished Croatian composer, conductor and educator Berislav Šipuš, a devoted promoter of contemporary musical expression with an exceptionally rich biography.  Ivan Josip Skender is the Ensemble’s permanent conductor. He is a versatile musician with a wide range of interests and activities, and currently one of the three artistic directors of the Music Biennale Zagreb.

At this festive concert within the Saturday at Lisinski series, marking the 25th anniversary of its activity, the Cantus Ensemble will be joined by the distinguished mezzo-soprano Ivana Srbljan in a performance of Luciano Berio’s Calmo for mezzo-soprano and 22 instruments. A frequent guest of the Ensemble, she has had a number of successful collaborations with it. The world-renowned hornist Radovan Vlatković, who regularly enchants audiences with his refined performances, will appear as soloist in the richly coloured Horn Concerto Winter Journey by Krzysztof Penderecki. The innovative LP Duo will perform Composé for Two Pianos and Orchestra by one of the leading figures of contemporary Croatian music, Milko Kelemen. On this festive occasion, the Cantus Ensemble will also complete its mission with a surprise – the premiere of a new work for ensemble, electronics and video by Tomislav Oliver, as a sign of new challenges and an open gaze toward the future.
