Sergei Prokofiev: Symphony No. 5 in B-flat major, Op. 100

Founded in 1919, the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra is Canada's third largest orchestra and the largest arts organization in Western Canada, and one of the few orchestras to have its own music school. In addition to its home province of British Columbia, it regularly tours throughout Canada, the USA, China and South Korea.

Dutch conductor Otto Tausk has been the orchestra’s Chief Conductor since 2018. He is also Artistic Advisor of the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra School of Music. He frequently includes contemporary music in his repertoire; among the numerous pieces he has premiered are works by five Canadian indigenous composers.

One Canadian piece will also be performed in the Zagreb concert – Adgilis Deda by Montreal-born composer Samy Moussa, which premiered in 2024. In addition to Sergei Prokofiev's Fifth Symphony in B-flat major, the programme also includes Samuel Barber's Concerto for Violin and Orchestra, in which the Orchestra will be joined by German violinist Arabella Steinbacher, an artist noted for her interpretations of 20th-century concertante works.
