The 'queen of instruments' in the hands of the 'queen of the organ' Iveta Apkalna, an evening of tradition and new discoveries!
Organist Iveta Apkalna has the status of a superstar in her homeland of Latvia!  The Government of the Republic of Latvia also presented her with the highest civilian order awarded for meritorious service to Latvia, the Order of the Three Stars,
and she has received many other awards from professional music associations and cultural institutions.  That she is an exceptional musician and one of the world's leading organists is proven by her performances with the world's most famous orchestras (the Berlin Philharmonic, the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra and the Cleveland Orchestra), under such wizards at conducting as Mariss Jansons, Kent Nagano, Gustavo Dudamel or Andris Nelsons. A great honour and recognition for Iveta Apkalna was the invitation to assume the position of titular organist of the Klais organ in the newly built Elbphilharmonic in Hamburg, which she also inaugurated, premiering the works of contemporary composers, Wolfgang Rihm and Jörg Widmann. Her worldview and dedication to music is seen through the fact that, although she is a world-renowned organist who receives invitations to perform in the world’s most prestigious concert halls, she still plays at masses in small churches in her homeland and is convinced that "with her organ sounds she can embrace the people who listen to her". As she says, she always tries to "tell an exciting story with her concert programs", in which she obviously succeeds! The programme of Iveta Apkalna's Zagreb organ recital within the Saturday at Lisinski concert series will offer masterful pieces by Bach and Glass.
