The Glazbene staze Ensemble has been active on the Croatian music scene for many years, distinguished by its unique mixed instrumental formation of flute, clarinet, violin, violoncello, and piano. In terms of instrumentation, it belongs to the so-called “Pierrot ensemble”, a formation rare worldwide and unique in Croatia. As the history of this ensemble type is relatively short—its first appearances date back to the early 20th century—the original repertoire consists primarily of contemporary music. When it comes to Croatian musical creation, it is worth noting that until recently there was almost no music written for the Pierrot ensemble. However, after 13 years of dedicated and continuous work by the Glazbene staze Ensemble, we can proudly say that most Croatian works for this formation have been written specifically for this ensemble. The ensemble has collaborated with numerous Croatian composers, including Bianca Ban, Ivan Končić, Marko Slaviček, Bruno Vlahek, Ivan Josip Skender, and Tomislav Uhlik. In 2020, the ensemble released its album “Pierrot Project op. 1”, featuring works composed especially for them. One of the ensemble’s long-held wishes was to continue its collaboration with Croatian composers and enrich its already substantial contemporary repertoire with new works inspired by Croatian traditional, folk, and popular music, characteristic of different regions of the country. In this way, the distinctive beauty of Međimurje, Dalmatian, Slavonian, Zagorje and Istrian songs finds its echo in contemporary classical music written for the Pierrot ensemble. An idea conceived long ago is being presented to the public for the first time this evening. Alongside John Harbison’s Suite Songs America Loves to Sing, the Glazbene staze Ensemble will perform the Croatian “Pierrot Songbook”, featuring works by Valerija Vranješ, Ivan Končić, Juraj-Marko Žerovnik, and Gordan Tudor. The concert is accompanied by an exhibition of works by academic painter Tatjana Politeo.
