Damenbal – Croatian Music for Piano Four Hands (CANTUS)
In the world of chamber music, few ensembles demand as much subtlety, mutual trust, and coordination as a piano duo. Two pianists, one instrument – and an invisible line between them that, when Iva Ljubičić Lukić and Kosjenka Turkulin sit at the keyboard, almost completely disappears.
Their new CD, Damenbal, released by the Cantus label, brings together works by Croatian composers for piano four hands – ranging from lyrical and poetic to virtuosic and theatrically playful compositions. The album offers a fresh and intriguing cross-section of contemporary Croatian music, featuring works by Ivan Končić, Zoran Juranić, Frano Parać, and Alfi Kabiljo, four composers whose distinct aesthetic approaches converge in the duo’s unique interpretative vision.
The album’s title work, Damenbal by Zoran Juranić, was composed in 2021 specifically for this piano duo, commissioned by the Zagreb Piano Duo Festival, founded and artistically directed by Iva Ljubičić Lukić and Kosjenka Turkulin. The piece reflects the composer’s characteristic blend of dense textures, dramatic impulse, and theatrical spirit, approached by the pianists with refined sensitivity and technical assurance.
In Končić’s The Diary of a Goldfish, playfulness and poetic charm lead into a world of impressions and short musical entries of a “forgetful aquarium fish,” while Parać’s Prelude and Waltz reveal a contemplative, almost philosophical approach to piano sound and its inner gradations. In his suites, Alfi Kabiljo retains his recognizable theatricality and melodic richness, presenting music full of spirit, movement, and irresistible charm.
For more than a decade, Iva Ljubičić Lukić and Kosjenka Turkulin have been devotedly shaping the piano duo scene in Croatia – as performers, educators, and promoters of new repertoire. Through the Zagreb Piano Duo Festival, their work has inspired the creation of numerous new compositions by Croatian composers, and this release represents the culmination of that continuity.
The album Damenbal was recorded in 2022 at the Elly Bašić Music School. The sound recording was realized at DM Audio Studio in collaboration with Mario and Zvonimir Domazet. Musical production was led by Kosjenka Turkulin and Iva Ljubičić Lukić, while the final sound – mixing and mastering – was handled by Zvonimir Domazet.
The editor of the release is Srđana Vrsalović; the booklet text was written by Karolina Rugle, proofreading by Darija Šćukanec, and the English translation by Mia Pleša. Photographer Matej Grgić captured the album’s visual story, while graphic design and layout were entrusted to Emil Šimik (Econik d.o.o.). The release was published with the support of the Ministry of Culture and Media of the Republic of Croatia.
The new CD by Iva Ljubičić Lukić and Kosjenka Turkulin is available as a physical release in the Cantus webshop and on all digital platforms, and concert-goers will also be able to purchase their copy at the Vatroslav Lisinski Concert Hall on 4 February 2026.
Alongside performances of works from the album and a moderated conversation led by musician and musicologist Lucija Job, the pianists will “frame” the album launch with beloved cornerstone works from the piano duo repertoire that have marked their long-standing artistic collaboration.
