Born on 15 June 1968 in Dabi, a small village in Mali’s Tombouctou region, Samba Touré was raised by his mother after his father died before he was born. Though he had no formal education, music surrounded him—his mother even sang with the young Ali Farka Touré at Mali’s Biennale Festival. As a young man he moved to Bamako, where he discovered Zairean guitar music and formed the band Farafina Lolo with his brother Bouri. Deeply inspired by Ali Farka Touré, Samba adapted traditional northern Malian sounds to electric guitar, developing his own desert blues style. After touring with Ali Farka Touré’s band in 1997, he launched his solo career with the album Fondo, a major success in Mali. Since then, Samba has become one of Mali’s leading guitarists, blending Songhai traditions, Niger River blues and Western influences. His internationally acclaimed albums—including Songhaï Blues, Crocodile Blues, Albala, and Gandadiko—celebrate Malian culture while promoting peace, unity and the importance of family.
