Gary Bartz is a saxophone (alto and soprano) and clarinet player, singer and composer. He entered in the elite society of jazz musicians in the ’60s when he started playing with Art Blakey, with whom he has recorded the first album. Afterwards he played among others with Miles Davies, Charles Mingus, Max Roach and McCoy Tyner. It‘s now more than fifty years that he is band leader of his own groups. Throughout his career he has recorded around two hundred albums in collaboration with other musicians and around forty as band leader, some of them became legendary jazz albums. Celebrated  jazz musicians including  Pharoah Sanders, Jackie McLean, Lee Konitz, Kenny Barron, Christian McBride, Dave Holland, Buster Williams, Jack DeJohnette and others have played on Bartz’ albums. This versatile musician is always ready for new challenges. With his Ntu Troop ensemble he played music based on bebop, avant-garde jazz, soul, funk and African music. It is exactly African culture that had a strong impact on his creative work. While composing music based on the poetry of Lanston Hughes he defined the guidelines of the future hip hop and acid jazz bands.
