Zagreb Philharmonic Orchestra
Domingo Hindoyan, conductor
Programme: H. Berlioz, J. Massenet, G. Bizet, G. Verdi, G. Puccini
After winning Placido Domingo's Operalia, the world’s leading opera competition, at Milan's La Scala in 2010, soprano Sonya Yoncheva became a bright star in the operatic sky and one of the most interesting and most prominent vocal artists of her generation. She is an unavoidable pivotal figure in the productions of the leading opera houses, such as: the Metropolitan Opera, the Royal Opera House, Bayerische Staatsoper, Deutsche Staatsoper Berlin, Wiener Staatsoper, Teatro alla Scala and Opéra de Paris.
She has played cult roles in the operatic repertoire: Mimi in Puccini’s La Boheme, Vitellia and Countess Almaviva in Mozart's La Clemenza di Tito and Le nozze di Figaro, Gilda, Desdemona and Elisabeth of Valois in Verdi’s Rigoletto, Otello and Don Carlos, Marguerite in Gounod's Faust, Lucia di Lammermoor in the opera of the same name by G.
Donizetti, Micaële in Bizet’s Carmen, Tatyana and Iolanta in Tchaikovsky's Eugene Onegin and Iolanta, etc. Her interpretation is characterized by strong dramatic expression and her extraordinary gentle and beautiful voice, recognized by both audiences and critics. Die Welt used the following words to comment on her interpretation of the leading role in Verdi's La Traviata: “She is the most sophisticated Violetta after Maria Callas.Bulgarian soprano Sonya Yoncheva is one of the best Traviatas in the world today.” Sonya also regularly and successfully appears on concert stages, putting the emphasis on the period interpretation of baroque music. She collaborated with renowned William Christie on his project Le Jardin des Voix, with which she toured Europe, Russia and the United States of America. She has an exclusive recording contract with Sony Classical, through which she released her new solo baroque music album titled Händel. She also used to record for Deutsche Grammophon. Medici.tv declared her the 2017 Artist of the Year. At her appearance in Zagreb, Sonya will be accompanied by the Zagreb Philharmonic Orchestra (that received a number of awards for outstanding artistic achievement this year, including the Award of the City of Zagreb) under prominent Venezuelan-Swiss conductor Domingo Hindoyan. He has conducted numerous world-renowned orchestras in performances of both concert and operatic repertoire in leading concert halls and opera houses. In the 2013/14 season, he was appointed the first assistant to Daniel Barenboim at the Staatsoper Berlin.
In the operatic world, it is not easy to achieve overnight success, let alone become a star. However, Sonya Yoncheva is already considered the successor of the great divas of both the past and present.
Thanks to Yoncheva's flawless technique and mellow voice, Tatyana performed by her will surely be one of the season's highlights.
Yoncheva opened the Met’s 2015/16 season with the role of Desdemona in Verdi's Otello and became the star of the evening, earning great reviews from critics and ovations from the audience.
